In an age where ‘self care’ has become a buzzword, how many of us are actually smashing (or even coming close to achieving) our self care goals? Let’s do a deep dive into what we can intentionally do to get closer to the best version of ourselves.
Get Motivated
Be very clear about why you set the goal, what impact it will have on you, how succeeding will make you feel. Write it down. Revisit it when the going gets tough. This is important because inevitably you will have some weak moments in the journey. To stop and remember why you started is what will actually keep you going strong on your path.
Set S.M.A.R.T Goals
Have you heard of S.M.A.R.T goals? That’s an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and anchored within a Time Frame. Be specific about what you want to do, by that time. Drink more water vs drink at least 3 litres of water every day for 90 days. You see the difference? Without that specificity it’s not a goal, just a wish.
Make A Plan
Be specific about the actions you need to take to reach the goal. If you want to get fitter, there are 100 different ways to go about it but what’s your plan?
Layer Habits
Existing habits act like an automatic trigger. If you already have an existing habit – say brushing your teeth every morning, add drinking two glasses of water to it. Or I will drink a glass of water every time I wash my hands. This is a neat little trick and truly works!
Track And Measure
Keep a daily record of your progress – good or bad. It’s important to stay accountable if you’re serious about achieving your goals.
Stick To It
Remember, it takes at least 30 days of doing something for it to become habitual so stick to it.
Don’t Stop If You Miss A Day
Changing behaviour is hard work. Go easy on yourself if you slip up. Remember – everyday is a new day! Don’t spiral when this happens. Instead challenge yourself to get back on track.
Reward Yourself
Think of something nice you can do or get once you succeed. This is the best part – the promise of a sweet gift from you to you for doing well.
Make It Public
The more open you are about your goal – the more likely you are to stick to it. Tell your family. Tell your friends. Put it on your Instagram. These things will force you to stay accountable. Trust me, it works like a charm!
